The flamboyant might appear as a deviation from the classic, exaggerated, or otherwise slightly bonkers, inciting the reader or viewer in its course and thus a rupture in the automatic or dominating view. This break might occur in relation – context – like the appearance of the sparkling blue eyes and frilly armor of a handsome knight amongst the mannered, articulated merchant portraits in a museum gallery.
Alisa Margolis, Discoteca Flamingstar and Megan Francis Sullivan are three artists working in Berlin with divergent practices, yet who share a proximity to a flamboyant shift. For this exhibition at Arcade, the artists select works and installation to recontextualize the meaning of each other’s works: flattening themselves to a sort of neutral background or rather building an abysmal background to host unicorns and further glories.
Alisa Margolis Alisa Margolis (1975, US) graduated from Columbia University, New York, before attending De Ateliers post-graduate program in Amsterdam. Her work has been exhibited internationally, and was included in the Saatchi Gallery publication “The Triumph of Painting”. Margolis has forthcoming solo exhibitions with Galerie Wilma Tolksdorf, Frankfurt and Nolan Judin, Berlin. “Theory of Everything,” an artist book and survey of her recent production, will be published by Akademie Schloss Solitude later this month.
Discoteca Flaming Star are an interdisciplinary collaborative art group, using songs and other forms of oral expression, understanding them as a personal response to historical events and social and political facts. Cristina Gómez Barrio and Wolfgang Mayer have been the foundation of Discoteca Flaming Star since 1998. in January 2012 they will be part of ‘Demonstrations. Making Normative Orders’ at Kunstverein Frankfurt, Frankfurt.
Megan Francis Sullivam (b. 1975, Stamford, Connecticut, US) studied at Cooper Union, NY and Städelschule, Frankfurt a.M. Recent exhibitions include Frieze Frame, London; Freymond-Guth Fine Arts, Zurich; Halle für Kunst, Lüneburg. In November she will read from a recently released publication ‘For Phil Andros’ at Miss Read, KW Berlin.
